  1. Gee, they’re much of a muchness, but the one on the right seems to be slightly smaller (also seems to be more downy – the third hatch, a couple of days behind the others?)

  2. could you open either of these? I couldn’t open either at work, but the 2nd one (the least useful) opened at home; the other had audio only.

  3. Cilla,
I was able to open both of them and the one you posted under Starling Bounty with IE Explorer 11 and Windows Media Player. The audio makes the adorable little chicks even more endearing and truly alive, but I can’t tell them apart, they all look about the same size to me, but I am no expert.

  4. Cilla, I can never watch your videos – they open as stills and won’t play :-/ In view of others with difficulties, I thought I’d put my mind to it this time 😉

If I copy and paste the link into Firefox it eventually shows a still picture which will not play. In Chrome browser, it brings up Windows Explorer to save the file, which I do. I then double-click on the file to play it, and Windows10 asks what “app” (grrr) I want to use and I choose VLC cos that’s my usual.

VLC reports “Broken or missing AVI index” – please see snap for details:

I choose “Play as is” and it plays fine 🙂

I have taken the liberty of uploading the two vids above to my YouTube channel (“unlisted”, so only users with these links will know about them).

    “size comparison ledge” 12s = youtube.com/watch?v=WfvPFivYVKM

    “31 10 2016 size comparison” 10s = youtube.com/watch?v=toCUjommneQ

I hope that will be a shortcut for other bloggers here who’ve had problems.

Now to see what foodies I can find for the day so far 🙂 I notice that the nest cam has been down a lot.

  5. I had no problem opening either of your links, Cilla. Audio worked on both. 😀 I use Chrome on Win 8.1, if that makes any diff. Haven’t tried opening them using Puffin on my Android tablet yet.

  6. Early morning activities.
    ================

0617hr – not available on the ledge cam, where a 3-chick huddle was frozen.

Someone brought in a scrap of early breakfast, which was claimed by one chick, leaving another to scape the barrel in vain:

    36s VIDEO = youtube.com/watch?v=yCuufD0G1zs

Nice view of Xav floating in and out, then breakfasts 2 & 3, and during the latter chick #3 (probably?) got a good exclusive feed after the others were sated… except one of them changed its mind and came back for more, and the other insults with a poop right across the nest! Ledge cam only:

    SNAPS

Just before 0600hr Diamond shouted at someone. I didn’t see Xav pop in at his usual time this morning.

I think this was the 2nd breakfast delivery, which was missing from ledge cam:

I have converted the videos from Cilla to mp4 format.

    yokoz.nl/slechtvalken/2016/or/size-comparison-ledge.mp4
    yokoz.nl/slechtvalken/2016/or/31_10_2016-size-comparison.mp4

I did it with ffmpeg, http://www.ffmpeg.org/download.html

The conversion command is quite simple:
    ffmpeg -i size-comparison-ledge.avi size-comparison-ledge.mp4

Advantage: The mp4 files are smaller and the mono audio is converted to stereo.

    size-comparison-ledge.avi = 13MB, size-comparison-ledge.mp4 = 2.8MB
    31_10_2016-size-comparison.avi = 19.3MB, 31_10_2016-size-comparison.mp4 = 5.3MB

My advice for Cilla is to save the videos in mkv format, avi is old fashioned.
Then convert them with ffmpeg to mp4. 😀

  8. I think I said yesterday that I always use MP4 – I didn’t know that AVI was “old-fashioned”, but MP4 produces much smaller files, easier to edit and acceptable to YouTube.

Coincidentally I started researching ffmpeg yesterday because I think it’s a component in my downloader, but I don’t think I need it.

Now! Here’s another fine mess I’ve gotten me into (sorry, Laurel ‘n Hardy)… I’ve no idea where I am.

1431hr prey delivery – no-one’s hungry, Xav flies by:

1821hr prey delivery – Xavier appears just before Diamond and then flashes by again:

I’m sure there was a lot more going on but I lost my way due to interruptions 🙁

  9. Diamond brought in prey but the chicks weren’t interested… so Xav lurked over her for ages, hoping for a share, until she took it over to the chicks.
