A brief video clip was caught of Swift taking in alternative nutrition in the form of a very large cicada yesterday, identified by local bug expert, Dr Murray Fletcher, as a Cyclochila australasiae – the green grocer cicada. They are plentiful right now and it’s not the first time we’ve caught these peregrines taking advantage of the bounteous season, but can imagine these bugs also provide a playful break from the high-intensity games.
Thanks to Dr Fletcher and to other CSU staff for helping to identify current prey!
Local readers can keep an eye out for the Project in the local Orange Central Western Daily newspaper as well tomorrow…
Great catch! Both the video and the bug 🙂
Lots of protein in them, very nutritious.
