Nestling needs a name

I have selected “colours” in Wiradjuri (local indigenous language) for this year’s theme. You don’t need to be literal or descriptive, just pick any three names you like. You may only pick THREE maximum and you can only vote once… additional votes will be deleted. Votes are anonymous, but I can tell if there are duplicates. You have until Sunday night 5 pm local time to vote. That’s 16th November.

Have a look around the website while you here…lots of interesting history of the site can be discovered here and you may also donate, but that is optional. Please do NOT copy the url for the google poll and/or paste elsewhere (eg Facebook) as the only condition of entry is that the person makes the effort to come to the FalconCam website.

NB I am assuming that after this length of time the other two eggs will not hatch. If one does, I will choose the second most popular name.

For your information, if the other two eggs are still intact by fledging time (early December), I will collect them and ‘candle’ them (place a light underneath to illuminate the contents). If the eggs are clear it means that they were not fertilised. If opaque it means that a chick was formed but did not mature to hatching stage. If the eggs are in good condition, I usually donate them to the Australian Museum in Sydney.

You might wonder why I use the term ‘nestling’ rather than ‘chick’. Although it’s not that important, chicks are technically offspring that are quite independent and able to leave the nest straightaway (known as precocial animals eg chickens, ducks) whereas nestlings are those in need parental care for a while before leaving the nest (known as altricial animals eg raptors).
