So all is going to plan apart from the minor detail that Gimbir has yet to provide prey for Diamond so she can incubate. She can leave the eggs for an hour or two to go hunting, and she can also go several days without food or water, but eventually she must eat. Today was poor weather as it was very cold and windy and there were few prey about. Let’s hope for better conditions tomorrow.

An alternative strategy might be for Gimbir to help with incubation, freeing Diamond up to hunt and here we have hopeful signs. Today he made some tentative steps towards covering the eggs, with success at the second attempt, although it didn’t last long.

It’s a steep learning curve for a very young falcon, who has to learn all the roles of fatherhood, including regular provision of food to the mother when his instinct might still be that she provides food for him! Diamond has been wailing today when Gimbir was hanging about in the box and one might interpret that call to suggest that she is not happy and that he should go and hunt.
