Well, a bit of surprise as the new young male is less than a year old, but he has been trying to do all the right courtship moves: pair-bonding, prey giving, scraping and of course mating. I wasn’t sure whether her fertility period was still active and/or had been kicked off again by the courtship rituals, however imperfect. It seems that it was.
Here is a video of the egg laying
There is a question over Gimbir’s ability to provide for Diamond during incubation as, although he is clearly able to hunt for himself, he hasn’t brought many prey gifts to Diamond yet. Hopefully that will change now that there is at least one egg. It will help, of course, if he offers to incubate so she can hunt too.
If there are more eggs to come there is usually a gap of 50-60 hours betweeen eggs being laid. Then incubation starts seriously when the penultimate egg (here that is usually the second egg) has been laid. The number of days between the first egg being laid and the first hatch at this site has been 36-39.
