After the weekend’s disappointments, the lightning strikes, the bad weather etc we had the most pleasant surprise this morning – video was sent through at lunchtime today of the first wee furry white head popping up. We have no idea whatsoever how this could happen after the lightning on Friday but we’re very, very pleased to see it. Now we await the second hatching. Later today we’ll climb the tower and obtain further close-up footage which will be posted here as well……. congratulations to the two adult peregrines!! We’re over the moon…
YouTube link to the first coverage here – thanks John, from Goulburn campus!! All our YouTube videos can be found by searching in YouTube under “peregrine falcon Orange”.
Stop Press: new close-up YouTube video (with sound) of the first chick feeding …
Interesting notes today include the female’s growing possessiveness of the nest and its contents as the time drew closer to hatching. We also noticed over the weekend that she’d started to bring food in to the nest (or eyrie); something that’s not normally done with eggs. Another noteworthy point to make is that the incubation period was far longer than “nominal” i.e. 40 days instead of 33 days, for the first egg.
